Best time to go shopping has changed: Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and ASDA – avoid queues

The best time to go shopping has changed as major UK supermarkets are updating their opening times. When should you go to Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and ASDA?

The busiest time to visit Tesco is 1pm, when you might find a 20 minute queue.

Weekdays are less busy than weekends. For the best chance to shop speedily, head to the shop Monday to Thursday, before 11am and after 4pm. Friday is much busier.

All Tesco stores are currently closing at 10pm.

The store states: “We have extended our special hour in stores for NHS staff as a thank you for all they are doing. The NHS hours are on Tuesdays and Thursday from 9am -10am in all large stores. Also on Sundays, they can continue to browse our large stores and select their shopping, an hour before the checkouts open.”

For the vulnerable it said: “We have prioritised one hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning between 9-10am for these customers. This does not include Express stores.”


Sainsbury’s quietest shopping day is Wednesday, and the quietest time is before 10am. Weekday waiting times tend to peak around lunchtime.

Friday is the busiest week day, and weekends are busiest overall.

When it comes to opening times, the company said on it’s website: “From Monday 23rd March, we are consolidating our opening hours and all our supermarkets will be open from 08.00 to 20.00 Monday – Saturday. With the exception of some stores in Scotland, Sunday opening hours will stay the same (please check on Store Locator for Sunday opening hours in your store). Sainsbury’s Local and petrol station hours will stay the same

“Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all our supermarkets will dedicate 08.00 to 09.00 to serving elderly customers, disabled customers and their carers.”

Aldi stores are quietest on Wednesday and Thursday evening. To avoid queues, stay away at the busiest time – 2pm on Sunday.

Aldi stores are currently open from 8am to 10pm.


Asda stores are busy on weekends, with queues taking up to 20 minutes on Saturday.

However, Monday and Friday are also busy – the busiest weekdays, with queues of up to 25 minutes on a Monday between 10:30am and 6:30pm.

The best time to shop in Morrisons is 7pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, and 6pm on Saturdays.

However, the busiest times, up to a 30 minute wait, is between 11am and 3pm.

The same goes for Fridays between 12 to 2pm and on Saturdays between 12pm to 3pm.

Asda opening times have changed for shoppers recently.

Asda has now announced it will extend opening hours to ensure shoppers have time to stock up on essential items.

In a post on Twitter today, the supermarket giant said: “Most of our stores are now open for longer to allow you more time to shop with us – stores will now be open Monday – Saturday 8am – 10pm.

“Normal Sunday trading hours will remain the same.”
