Apple introduces smaller iPhone 12 mini for $699

Apple is trying something with its new iPhone 12 that it hasn’t done in years: making it smaller.

The tech giant on Tuesday announced the iPhone 12 mini, its smallest flagship device since the iPhone 5.

With a 5.4 inch display, the iPhone 12 mini packs all the same internals as its larger counterpart, and Apple boasts that it is “the smallest and lightest 5G phone in the world.”

Indeed, the iPhone 12 mini has a larger screen than the mega-popular iPhone SE while still fitting into a smaller body.

The new iPhone design abandons the rounded edges that the device has sported for the past several years, replaced instead by iPad Pro-style flat edges that harkens back to the design of Apple’s mega-popular iPhone 4 line.

The phone, which starts at $699, has two 12-megapixel cameras and improved Night Mode photography. The iPhone 12 mini’s glass screen has a coating Apple has dubbed “Ceramic Shield,” which it says will protect the display from cracks and scratches.

The iPhone 12 mini will come in black, white, green, blue and red color variants, and will be available for preorder on Nov. 6.
