Adult Material viewers praise single mum sex worker Jolene’s ‘educational’ speech where she defends ‘the only industry women get paid more than men’ while still being home in time to cook dinner
- Jolene found herself in front of daughter’s headmistress in Adult Material
- Phoebe had been suspended after making explicit video of another pupil public
- Jolene gave speech about being sex worker and financially stable single mum
Adult Material viewers praised Jolene’s empowering speech about being a sex worker and financially stable single mum in last night’s episode of the Channel 4 show.
During the episode, Jolene, played by Hayley Squires, found herself enraged when her daughter Phoebe’s headmistress told her she thought her career in the porn industry was having a negative impact on her young girl.
And it wasn’t long before viewers took to Twitter to commend Jolene for speaking her mind and defending her life decisions.
‘Loved the uncompromising portrayal of each character in #AdultMaterial they have no discernible boundaries & neither does this show!,’ wrote one. ‘Hard to watch but it raised so many important issues about porn culture without condemning those that work in it. Human & engaging.’

During the episode, Phoebe learned she had been suspended from school after she violated another pupil’s privacy, and the school code, by making public a sexually explicit video of him.
The headmistress then commented: ‘There are may be things at home that seem normal but in the outside word there are different boundaries.’
It was only when Phoebe made her exit, that a fuming Jolene vented: ‘Excuse me? OK, we are talking about my job are we?’
‘I have always said to Phoebe you want me to stop I will stop – she knows that. 18 is not a child. I was bringing Phoebe by myself when I was 18.’
‘This is my reality. I work in the only industry in the world where women get paid more than men.

Taking to Twitter, one person penned: ‘Loving that they’re addressing sexism, not loving the double standards’
‘I run my own business and I still get home in time to cook my kids dinner. That is actually what you can’t tolerate, isn’t it?
‘That a working-class mum who left a s*** school with three GCSE’s is getting paid three times your wage and does something she loves and something she is good at rather than being sat at behind a counter at a checkout.’
And those who tuned in were delighted with Jolene’s empowering words.
‘Whomever wrote the script for #AdultMaterial deserves a Bafta,’ commented one. ‘When you have young women who genuinely look at p-rn as a viable career path because all they see is the edit, and the cash… if one watches and feels more educated on their decision – job done That’s what TV is for!’
A second penned: ‘Loving that they’re addressing sexism, not loving the double standards.’
Meanwhile, a further added: ‘So good, highlighting the fact that woman can be successful and independent and that its possible to leave school with no GCSE’s and still go on to earn more money than some.’
