Going into AW20, there's a whole host of ankle boot trends to look out for—from cowboy boots and chain embellishments to bold heel shapes and platforms.

There's also plenty of room for all your favourite styles too: the classic Chelsea boot for instance, is one we can never live without.

We've rounded up some of the most essential ankle boots below that will transition from summer to autumn effortlessly—and then back again.

Time to put your best foot forward…

1. Best for channeling the Western trend: Buffalo's Fabia Cowboy Boots

  1. (AD) Buffalo Fabia Cowboy Boots, from £24.84 from Amazon – buy here

Giddy up cowgirl: if there's one trend you need to get behind right now, it's AW20's penchant for all things Western.

Cowboy boots are always a firm festival favourite, but they've transcended the fields over the past few seasons to become a bona fide hit for hitting the pavement.

We're loving the sleek, suede finish of these black boots by Buffalo, which pay a nod to the trend with a stylish buckle. Wear with your favourite floral dress or a cropped jean to properly show these off.

2. Amazon Find's Brown Snake Ankle Boots

  1. (AD) Find Brown Snake Ankle Boots, £46.90 from Amazon – buy here

Amazon's own brand, Find, is definitely one to watch —especially if these amazing snake-print boots are anything to go by.

At under £50, these are dead ringers for Aeyde's coveted Ivy boots, right down to the 60s style heel.

Snake print is huge again this year and is always a timeless animal print, so you can snap these up safe in the knowledge they'll last the distance.

3. We tried: Sole Bliss' Debut Tan Leather Boots

  • Debut Tan Leather boots, £210 from Sole Bliss – buy here

A firm favourite of Dame Helen Mirren, Sole Bliss is for anyone who doesn't want to sacrifice on style when it comes to comfortable footwear—so pretty much most of us, then.

Launched by London fashion executive Lisa Kay in 2011, each pair of Sole Bliss shoes features Comfort Technology—a triple-layer cushioning system that supports and soothes the foot.

Having got way too used to the comfort of trainers throughout lockdown, we were intrigued to try out a pair of Sole Bliss boots. Could they be as comfortable as they say?

We opted for the Debut boot in tan, which is crafted from Italian leather and is also leather-lined, featuring a wooden block heel and even a bunion bed that "cradles the bunion without altering the silhouette of the shoe". So far so good.

Our boots arrived in a super-cute pale pink shoe box, along with a handy dust bag to keep them stored safely.

While we luckily don't have bunions and therefore can't speak for that feature of the boots, in terms of comfort, these truly are a dream to wear. We would normally add a cushioned insole to our boots, but with these it wasn't neccessary—plus the leather is buttery soft, as opposed to the stiffness of some leathers which need wearing in.

Ovevrall, we're really pleased with our Sole Bliss boots. At £210, they might not come cheap but they're a definite investment and the fact they're approved by UK Podiatrists makes them that bit more impressive.

4. Best neutral boots: Zara's Lace-up Leather High Heel Ankle Boots

  • Lace-up Leather High Heel Ankle Boots, £59.99 from Zara – buy here

Neutral shades are perfectly on-trend this season, as are re-shaped heels, so these sleek boots by Zara are great for nailing two-in-one.

Camel-coloured leather looks oh-so-chic, plus we're loving the Victoriana inspired lace-up detailing and square toes.

Wear these on days you need to look ultra-polished: they won't let you down.

5. Best chunky boots: New Look's Black Faux Croc Lace Up Boots

  • Black Faux Croc Lace Up Boots, £35.99 from New Look – buy here

Sometimes, a pair of big chunky boots is exactly what's needed for getting about—so make sure you do it in style with these boots from New Look.

Perfect for toughening up a dress or skirt, the faux croc finish really stands out, while the buckle detailing adds to the biker effect.

With a rounded, cleated sole, they look really comfy too and are part of New Look's improved comfort footwear. Heaven!

6. Best designer boots: Stella McCartney's Platform Ankle Boots

  • Stella McCartney platform ankle boots, £545 from Farfetch – buy here

One word: WOW.

These Stella McCartney beauties are big in stature and even bigger in impact. Channelling the swinging '60s in the most fabulous of ways, these faux leather, rubber-soled ankle boots are unmissable in burgundy red.

Snap them up and get ready to walk tall.
