2001 Golden Globes fashion flashback

The stars will celebrate at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards on Feb. 28, 2021. Even amid the coronavirus pandemic, the night is still expected to be epic, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler once again returning to host the show. In honor of the event’s 78th year, Wonderwall.com is flashing back to 2001 to see what the stars wore to the 58th Annual Golden Globes 20 years ago, starting with Jennifer Lopez. In January 2001, J.Lo walked the red carpet in a shiny, short gold satin dress with an embellished shoulder. The singer-actress accessorized with a black clutch, a big bracelet and strappy metallic heels. Keep reading for more 2001 Golden Globes fashion…

Back when she was still in Destiny’s Child, Beyonce attended the Golden Globes. The singer wore a red dress with a pink sparkly layer covering much of it (and giving it a little Bey flair). Her dress also showed off her toned legs with a super-high slit.

Sandra Bullock, who was nominated for her work in “Miss Congeniality” in 2001, wore a black dress with an embellished and fitted bodice held up with spaghetti straps. The actress shied away from glitzy jewels, opting to wear a rope necklace instead.

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones were both nominated for Golden Globes in 2001. The then-newlyweds went in different directions for the award show, with Michael choosing a classic black tux and Catherine donning a teal blue strapless gown with bizarre beading along the chest — more fitting for a lamp than such a major TV moment.

Presenter Charlize Theron wore a plunging strappy black dress to the award show at the Beverly Hilton hotel. She kept her accessories simple save for a black-and-white floral embellishment on the bodice.

In 2001, Julia Roberts took home the Golden Globe for her performance in “Erin Brockovich.” She did it wearing one of her most timeless looks — only she could manage to make a basic dark blue long-sleeved dress so elegant.

Lara Flynn Boyle was fierce in her shimmering icy blue gown at the 2001 Globes. She made a risky move with the dark blue stole, but it more than paid off.

Debra Messing looked super-chic at the 2001 Golden Globes in a boldly striped black-and-white gown with those ever-popular thin straps. The “Will and Grace” star, who was nominated that year, pulled her hair back, letting the dress and its short train and bold pattern shine.

Nominee Megan Mullally was demure in a black dress with long sleeves and V-neckline. The “Will and Grace” star carried a black leather bag and choose a gold link necklace instead of the diamonds seen on so many others.

Sarah Jessica Parker posed on the red carpet at the 2001 Golden Globes with a suit-and-tie-clad Vince Vaughn — who’d guest starred on her hit show “Sex and the City” the previous year — wearing a long pink strapless dress with embellishments along her chest. SJP won a Golden Globe that night for her work as Carrie Bradshaw on HBO series.

Best supporting actress winner Kate Hudson, who took home the statuette for her performance in “Almost Famous” in 2001, picked a popular silhouette: a slinky black dress with the thinnest straps possible and minimal jewels.

Laura Linney unknowingly rocked the same style gown that Kate Hudson donned for ths 2001 Globes when she picked this slinky, simple deep lavender dress with thin straps. Laura’s look was mostly elegant but could have used a steaming before she posed for photos.

Renee Zellweger won a Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy for her work in “Nurse Betty” in 2001. She arrived in a super-simple ensemble — a black strapless gown paired with a diamond necklace and bracelets. The only thing that remotely dates her look? Those criss-cross heels.

Jessica Alba went with a safe option at the 2001 Golden Globes in a tea-length black frock paired with sling-back heels. The nominee — for her work on TV’s “Dark Angel” — pulled her hair back and swept her bangs over her forehead, adding to the classic and understated look.

Kim Cattrall attended the 2001 Golden Globes as a nominee for her work on “Sex and the City.” Kim wore a royal purple strapless gown with a sheer wrap. The look would have been a showstopper, but her too-dark makeup distracted from it.

Freddie Prinze Jr. walked then-girlfriend Sarah Michelle Gellar down the red carpet at the Golden Globes the year she was nominated for her performance as the titular character on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Freddie wore a dark blue suit with a white tie with his blonde hair, which was (unfortunately) bleached for his role in “Scooby-Doo” at the time. Sarah looked gorgeous in a cream-colored gown covered in a red pattern plus a classic beauty look — pulled-back hair with a sweet middle part and bright red lipstick, which tied the youthful yet elegant look together.

Calista Flockhart gave off a touch of Easter Sunday vibes with her outfit at the 58th Annual Golden Globes. The “Ally McBeal” actress, who was nominated for her work on the popular television show, wore a lavender knee-length dress with a high neckline. The sheer fabric falling from the shoulder gave the appearance of a wrap, making it even more conservative. To top it off, Calista’s shoes were too matchy-matchy.

Erika Christensen was another star at the 2001 Golden Globes who forwent a typical floor-length gown. Erika picked a strapless blue dress covered with jewels and darker blue embellishments. She carried a black purse and wore black heels in a height that would be considered conservative on today’s red carpets.

Allison Janney walked the red carpet on Jan. 21, 2001, in a pale green dress that featured a fairly long train. The “West Wing” actress, who was a Golden Globe nominee that year, wore yellow diamonds on her wrist and neck for the big night.

“Harlan Country War” star and Globes nominee Holly Hunter showed off her enviable figure in this slinky silver gown. Holly’s halter-style dress needed nothing more than the gorgeous diamond earrings she wore with it.

Sigourney Weaver looked fierce in burnt red on the Golden Globes red carpet. The presenter let the color dominate her look — she carried a purse and wore lipstick in the same shade — and it worked perfectly. She also played into the golden flecks in her dress with all gold jewelry, adding to the sartorial drama.

Jane Seymour was the picture of glitz and glamour at the Golden Globes in 2001. The timeless actress stunned in a golden dress covered in silver sequins that gave it an almost leopard-print look. Jane didn’t let the sparkles end there — she also carried a golden clutch and wore a diamond necklace that played well against the jeweled straps of her gown.

Patricia Heaton’s 2001 Golden Globes outfit — a slinky, simple black gown — showed off her figure beautifully. She added a bit of flair to the look with a red beaded belt and a red drop necklace.

Lucy Liu’s 2001 Globes red carpet dress was sophisticated and tasteful. Lucy wore a halter-style black gown with a feathered bottom. The dress had a swirling embellishment along the side, jazzing up the elegant dress.
