Cadillac has taken inspiration from 1990 classic Edward Scissorhands for their latest Super Bowl ad ahead of this year’s game – even roping in original star Winona Ryder.
Yep, nearly three decades on from the film’s release, Winona is back and reprising her role as Kim, who was the love interest of Johnny Depp’s lead character Edward Scissorhands.
The ad is pretty much Edward Scissorhands 2.0, as Timothée Chalamet puts his own spin on the iconic character by starring as Edgar Scissorhands – Edward and Kim’s son – in the 90-second long clip.
Of course, he’s inherited his dad’s pesky scissors for hands and they prove to be a little tricky, with poor Edgar getting in all sorts of problematic situations, including getting his hands stuck in a metal fence and accidentally puncturing a football while trying to catch itl
You can only imagine his delight then when his mum gifts him a new Cadillac that just so happens to be come with a hands-free setting.
‘This is a story of a boy with scissors for hands,’ Winona is heard saying as the advert begins. ‘No, not that one… this one my son Edgar.’
Fans were absolutely living for the mini reboot, with one tweeting: ‘omg okay why am i vibing with this? i actually think this is perfect.’
Another commended Cadillac on its casting, as they posted: ‘I accept this Timothee Chalamet can be their love child 100%.’
‘THIS IS SO CUTE OMG like it warms my heart,’ said one fan, while one more agreed: ‘AAAAHHHH THIS IS REALLY CUUUTEEE what a good idea!!!’
Others couldn’t help but question how exactly Kim gave birth to a mini-Scissorhands, with one fan tweeting: ‘Okay…It’s a wonderful ad. I love it. But… There are some things that lead the mind to very unfortunate places…like the unavoidable realization that she had to carry razor sharp shears in her womb and then give birth. Food for thought,’ tweeted one curious.’
Edward Scissorhands came out in 1990 and was directed and produced by Tim Burton and was a box office hit, with the movie going on to gross over four times its $20million (£14.5m) budget.
It wasn’t the only film that was given a nod in this year’s Super Bowl ads, as John Travolta was seen bringing back his iconic Grease dance moves all in the name of plant food.
He re-created the Born To Hand Jive dance routine with his daughter Ella, that was once made famous by Travolta and his Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John in the 1978 movie.
This year’s Super Bowl takes place in Tampa, Florida and will see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Weeknd will be performing during the famous halftime show, following in the footsteps of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira who stormed the stage in Miami, last year.
