Why Prince Harry and Prince William’s feud moved their biographer to tears

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their severance from the Royal Family, the decision left a bitter taste in the mouths of many. While Harry and Meghan seem to be living their best, new lives in the United States with their son baby Archie, there are still many relationships that tether Harry to his homeland and to which he may eventually return.

Among those relationships is Harry’s dynamic with his older brother, Prince William, which has come under public scrutiny as of late. That’s partially because of a potentially bombshell new book by biographer Robert Lacey that delves into the royal brothers’ recent feud, the roots of which go back to the fallout of the divorce between their parents — Prince Charles and Princess Diana — decades ago, according to The Daily Mail

According to the book, the brothers’ “once unbreakable” bond faced a “devastating breakdown” in the past year and a half. Lacey, who was also the consultant for The Crown on Netflix, said that while researching for his book, he was “astonished” and “sometimes moved to tears.”

The book claims that while the two have drifted apart recently, the “seeds of damage were sown” when their parents’ marriage went downhill and only made worse by their dynamic as a “heir and the spare.”

The brothers need "space and time"

Other accounts tell a slightly nuanced, but still similar, story. According to The Times, the brothers “fell out because William wasn’t friendly towards Megan.” Those reports say that WIlliam’s hostile, or at least less-than-welcoming, attitude began before the knot was tied.

And since then, their relationships does not seem to have recovered. In the aftermath and drama that followed Meghan and Harry’s decision to move to the Untied States, a source close to William expressed to Us that he was “tired and done with the drama of it all.”

“Seeing Harry cut ties with virtually every aspect of his English life and identity is so hard to fathom,” the source said. “It breaks William’s heart.”

But his own heart wasn’t William’s only concern — evidently, the prince also expressed fear that his brother should move to “somewhere safer” than America.

Harry and William, the source said, “need space and time to breathe, then hopefully they’ll work it out.”
