The Royal Family are some of the most well-known figures around the world, but they haven’t been exempt from the odd shocking moment or two over the years.
The most recent moment saw Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan opening up to Oprah Winfrey in an exclusive interview. They didn’t hold back from speaking about their families and provided insight into their personal lives, including the rifts and strains in their personal relationships with family members.
In the two hour special, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex opened up about mental health struggles, an emotional exchange Meghan had with Duchess Kate and the gender of their second child, among other bombshells.

In the two-hour interview "Oprah With Meghan And Harry: A Primetime Special", the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a series of bombshell claims – including Harry saying Prince Charles had at one point stopped taking his calls and Meghan saying she was suicidal during her time in the Royal Family.
Though 600 people Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle’s wedding inside St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, the bride had just one family member present, her mother Doria Ragland. The Royal Family had previously announced that Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, would walk his daughter down the aisle. However, two days before the wedding, Meghan released a statement saying, "Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health." In a TV interview after the big day, Thomas said, "The unfortunate thing for me now is that I’m a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle. So that upsets me somewhat."
In 2017 The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were awarded £92,000 in damages after a photographer had taken and published topless pictures of the Duchess Kate whilst sunbathing on a private property in 2012. Buckingham Palace came to her defence and a French court ruled that the pictures were an invasion of the couple’s privacy.
In 2014, 17-year-old Virginia Roberts accused Prince Andrew of forcing sexual relations when she was a minor in three different locations – London, New York and Jeffrey Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands. Buckingham Palace denied these allegations, and later a judge decided that all allegations again Prince Andrew be struck from court records. In 2019, in an interview with the BBC, Prince Andrew categorically denied the sex claims.
In 2012, photos of Prince Harry emerged showing him completely naked, playing a game of strip billiards in Vegas. The then 27-year-old prince was on a holiday before heading off to Afghanistan for the British Army. It’s thought Buckingham Palace was not best pleased with his behaviour, while Harry’s brother Prince William was reportedly ‘not impressed’ by his actions.
In 1996, after four years of separation, Prince Charles and Princess Diana formally agreed to divorce. On July 29th 1981, nearly one billion TV viewers tuned in to see the wedding. But before long the couple grew apart partly due to particularly painful experiences under the eyes of the world’s tabloid media. In return for a generous settlement, and the right to retain her title of Princess of Wales, Diana agreed to relinquish the title of Her Royal Highness and any future claims to the British throne.
The Duke and Duchess of York married in a fairytale wedding at Westminster Abbey in 1986, five years after Prince Charles and Princess Diana. During their Marriage Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew had two Children – Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. The couple experienced hardships during their marriage which caused them to separate in 1992 and later divorce in 1996. However, it was something surprisingly scandalous that broke down the couple’s relationship when Fergie was photographed with her toes in the mouth of Texan financial advisor John Bryan, while wearing a bikini and lounging in the sun. Andrew and Sarah were still married at the time, with the photographs also showing the two kissing and cuddling in their swimwear.
In 1995, Princess Diana caused controversy when she sat down for an extensive interview with the BBC. Princess Diana spoke candidly to the interviewer Martin Bashir as she dropped a number of bombshells including the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles, as she opened up about her life as a member of the Royal Family. The interview was kept a secret from Buckingham Palace and was not deemed fitting of typical royal conduct.
Princess Margaret spent a lot of time with Royal Air Force Officer Captain Peter Townsend, and the two fell in love. As the head of the church, the Queen could not permit Margaret’s marriage to Peter as he was a divorcee with two children and 16 years her senior. The doomed relationship hit the headlines in the 1953 when Townsend proposed to Princess Margaret, pressure from the Palace was widely considered the reason the couple ended the engagement two years later.
Edward VIII took the throne in 1936, but renounced it a year later so that he could marry Wallis Simpson. The American socialite was a two-time divorcee and when Edward proposed, there was social and political uproar. The Church of England forbade him from marrying a divorced woman, and he was forced to abdicate the throne. This massive royal scandal changed the line of succession entirely, ultimately, pre-determining that 10-year-old Princess Elizabeth would become the future Queen of England.
