Former Top Gear host Richard Hammond, 50, recently embarked on a global adventure to explore the world’s biggest structures and machines for his self-titled show, Big. However, The Grand Tour presenter has revealed he was surprised by his courage to climb the tallest buildings, as the dad-of-two confirmed he is afraid of heights.
Speaking to Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on This Morning, Richard openly discussed his fears and joked that he wasn’t “too bright” to take on the challenge.
The TV star revealed that he only noticed his fear of heights after the birth of his first daughter.
“The thing is I miscalculated a little bit because I soon discovered that ‘Big’ often also means high,” Richard explained.
“I’m not brilliant with heights. I used to be as a kid.”
He continued: “I would always be walking along the edge of a cliff and was never bothered by heights.
“But then when I had children – shortly after my first daughter was born – I was talking to a camera standing on top of a tower by a river.
“We were having a chit-chat and then all of a sudden I thought, ‘I’m scared’.”
Richard added: “And from that moment on I became scared of heights. So that wasn’t ideal.”
Ruth quizzed: “So why did you agree to go up the Burj Khalifa?” before adding: “The highest building in the world.”
Richard replied: “I’m not very bright. I like to use my imagination to see what might be waiting for me.
“And also it is an incredible building.”
Richard’s Amazon Prime series aired earlier this year, ahead of the coronavirus pandemic which has seen numerous TV projects be halted.

Viewers have been awaiting the next episode of the Grand Tour, which was previously announced to be taking place in Madagascar.
His co-star Jeremy announced last month the episode was completed and edited and in Amazon’s hands.
Elsewhere, Richard teased during a DriveTribe Q&A that his co-host and MythBusters star Tory Belleci tends to “upstage” him while filming their upcoming project.
When quizzed on what viewers can expect from the series, Richard teased: “It’s all kind of under wraps, but it’ll be on later this year.
“It is very, very, very, new and fresh. It’ll be unlike anything I’ve done before.”
Richard then took the opportunity to praise Tory for his work in the show and joked his appearances on the programme take all the attention away from him.
He continued: “It will be something really fresh, really brand new.
“There’s loads of content in it, loads of interesting stuff, but it is fun and funny and Tory is epic in it.
“He upstages the hell out of me in every scene but I really don’t mind because it makes a better show.”
Richard Hammond’s Big is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
