Olivia & Alex Bowen unveil ‘kinky’ Valentine’s Day plans as they intend to ‘spice things up’ in the bedroom

The nation fell in love with Olivia and Alex Bowen back in 2016 when they won each other's hearts on Love Island. Becoming one of the most successful couples in the show's history, the pair became the first contestants on the show to marry in a lavish ceremony covered by OK! magazine.

Now, with Valentine's Day fast approaching, the pair have given their most intimate interview to date, opening up on their sex life and how they "spice things up" for their bedroom antics.

You have teamed up with Lovehoney this Valentine’s Day. Have you always been fans of their products?

Olivia: I think it was about a year ago actually that I started seeing their stuff online. They do lots of lovely lingerie, they do lots of lovely kinky bits, they just have a great range of products and I love how open minded they are and how open about sex they are, it’s a really nice thing to have, especially with social media. I think women talk about it too, they talk to women about it and I think that’s something that’s coming into play more with social media.

Why do you think it is so important for the taboo around women speaking about sex to be broken?

Olivia: I remember when I was in school and we had sex education, we learned the bare minimum and women’s pleasure was never spoken about, and I think that’s been the way for quite a while. If a guy spoke about pleasuring himself it would be fine, but if a woman spoke about it then it wouldn’t be okay, and I think it’s really nice that Lovehoney are breaking that taboo. Women can make themselves happy, you don’t need a man to do that! Even though I’ve got one to do it, not all women do. You can make yourself happy and I think that’s a really important message to be putting across.

Do you incorporate toys into the bedroom a lot?

Olivia: We have tried lots of different things, we’ve been together five years now.

Alex: Yeah, Olivia mentioned them to me when she saw them online last year. For Valentine’s Day, I know it’s quite a selfish present, but I bought Olivia some lingerie even though it was probably more for me.

Olivia: Especially on special occasions, if we’re going on holiday or a weekend away, I think it’s really nice to spice things up.

Do you each have a favourite from the Valentine’s range?

Olivia: We haven’t used it yet but we have the Sucker For Love Couple’s Bundle and it comes with a few interesting bits that we’re going to give a go. There’s also a Kinky Confessions card set which, after a few drinks, will be very funny and make for a good night.

Alex: Obviously we can’t go out and buy anything because of lockdown but, I didn’t actually know this, Liv has something planned for Valentine’s Day. We’ll play the Kinky Confessions game and have a few glasses of Champagne.

We saw on Instagram that you have bought Olivia some lingerie to enjoy this Valentine’s Day. Do you enjoy dressing up in the bedroom?

Alex: I really like it. Every time we go away, I always say ‘Are you going to take this? Are you going to take that?’

Olivia: I mean, on the day to day, I don’t even wear a bra at the moment because we’re in lockdown so I am so chilled, but when we do have special occasions in the bedroom, we like to dress up in the bedroom. I like to have some stockings, really pretty bras and Alex likes it because he can kind of take control.

Alex: I like it for about 15 or 20 seconds and then I rip it off.

Olivia: Yeah, he wastes all of my pretty lingerie.

We obviously know you best from Love Island, was that sexual attraction there for both of you as soon as Alex entered the villa?

Olivia: Oh, definitely. Everybody talks about love at first sight but I do think it’s always lust at first sight because you know when you fancy someone and we both definitely fancied each other from the moment we saw each other, but we were never serious. Both myself and Alex had never had a serious relationship, we hadn’t fallen in love with anyone before Love Island, so we took it really chilled and it just sort of got more serious as time went on, and now we’re married!

You’ve spoken about having babies in the future but recently said you’d put plans to start a family on hold, why is that?

Olivia: There’s a couple of reasons. I am really bad with anxiety and I am quite worried to get pregnant, I’m nervous about giving birth, I’ve had this fear for years. I know that I’m going to want a lot of people around me and, obviously, you can’t have that at the moment so I just want the world to go a little bit back to normal and then I can have a really strong support system around me because I do think I’m going to need it. The other reason is that I got a horse, didn’t I? So we’ve got another child on the farm.

It was revealed when you left the villa that you were the couple that had sex the most on your series — do you have any regrets about having sex on TV?

Alex: I couldn’t care less, to be honest with you. We’re talking about sex toys on the phone. It’s a natural thing to talk about. It wasn’t shown, it was under the covers, obviously people knew what we were doing, but no.

Olivia: I think it would be weird to regret it. I’ve always said I kind of live by no regrets. We were young.

Alex: We were having the best time ever!

Shortly after leaving the villa, you were victim of a nude leak, Alex. How did it feel being exposed in that way?

Alex: I don’t really care.

Olivia: When you’re that well endowed I don’t think you mind, do you? It’s not ideal, it is an invasion of privacy.

Alex: That was obviously sent to somebody I’d dated before and I was with Liv at the time [of the leak] so it wasn’t very nice for her but, it’s something that happened, it’s in the past. It is what it is.

Olivia: It’s such a serious thing to do now to leak images, but back then and because it was a guy, people just laughed at it and reposted it and looking back, I do think ‘God, if that was a woman and people were reposting that…,’ there is a bit of inequality there but we do laugh about it because it is in the past and you can’t do much about it.

Zara McDermott has been very open about her own experience with revenge porn, are you supporting her on her campaign?

Olivia: I think what she’s doing is absolutely amazing, I can’t wait to watch her show where she speaks about it because I know she’s been a victim of it and it has really effected her, and a lot of people and other reality stars. But I do think it was leaked of Alex and nobody took that seriously and it is weird that if it happens to a guy it’s okay which is really, really wrong and I think it needs to be taken seriously on both ends of the spectrum. If we’re going to talk about it, we need to talk about it for both situations.

You’ve spoken before about difficulties during sex due to size of Alex's manhood, what tips can you give to people who are struggling to enjoy sex because of that?

Olivia: I’m not a sex expert, but the best advice I can give to people is lots of lube, lots of lubrication and just take it slow, respect your partner’s wishes and be careful with each other. You and your partner both know what you’re comfortable with and boundaries need to be set but it is about taking things slow, there’s no rush.

Has lockdown heightened your sex drive or lowered it?

Olivia: It’s a weird one. In summer, it definitely heightened it but in winter, we go in to hibernation. It’s been nice to just spend so much time in the house together and we did have arguments but, with arguments comes make-up sex.

Are there times when you just can’t be bothered?

Olivia: Of course! Everyone has those moments, especially if they’re hungover or if you’ve had a busy day. People do find it hard to fit it in around their jobs, especially when people have been together 10+ years, things become a bit stagnant but I think it’s important to just remember why you’re with someone, what you felt when you first met them, and just be honest with each other.

Alex: Don’t put too much pressure on it. I know in girls’ group chat and lads’ group chats, it’s all like, ‘how many times have you had sex this week?’ Don’t compare yourself to other couples. When you have sex, you have sex, and when you don’t that’s where Lovehoney comes in.

A lot of Love Island and other reality stars have signed up for OnlyFans. What do you think of that movement?

Olivia: I don’t think I’d ever do it, personally, but I think it’s very empowering to be able to make that decision on your own terms. It’s the same with sex work, it’s up to you what you do with your body. I think it is empowering for women if you’re doing it for the right reasons and you don’t get too sucked in and you’re careful and not meeting up with people, because the internet can be a scary place.

Adam Collard has launched an OnlyFans account but it’s only focussed on fitness. Do you think you would use the platform for something similar?

Alex: I’ve already got my own fitness website and I’ve got a fitness app coming out so I don’t think I would push it out on OnlyFans but, Adam’s one of my mates, so if he’s taken that route then fair play to him but it’s not something that I would do. I think it’s good that he’s trying to change the aspect of OnlyFans because, it’s not frowned upon, but I do think people think of it as a sex work platform. If you want to do OnlyFans, do OnlyFans, some people are more sexual than others.

This year’s Valentine’s Day is going to be very different as restaurants and hotels will be closed, so how will you be spending it this year?

Alex: Olivia’s arranged a surprise for me but I do think I know what it is.

Olivia: We’re just going to have a nice meal, a few drinks, get dressed up, make a bit of an effort and then, just enjoy ourselves and make the best of a weird situation. But I’ll be doing the cooking I guess.

Alex: Yes.

What advice do you have for people who are struggling to come up with ideas for what to do this Valentine’s Day?

Alex: Get on Lovehoney! Buy a few little bits and have a great night. Everyone’s in the same position, some people have got it worse than others through lockdown. We’re lucky but it’s harder for some people and some people will be on their own and it is hard. You’ve just got to make the best of it and order a few little bits online, get some rose petals and make it a bit romantic. Decorate your kitchen, do a nice dining table set up. Even just dress up! Put a pair of jeans on, a nice dress, don’t be in your pyjamas.

Olivia: And if you’re not in a relationship then organise a Zoom with your girls, go on FaceTime and make a few cocktails. I know it seems a bit mundane compared to what we all would have been doing, but just make the best of a bad situation.
