Captain Tom Moore completed 100 laps around his garden before his 100th birthday to raise money to support the NHS. Captain Tom initially set out to raise £1,000. However, he has now raised over £32 million from more than one and a half million supporters.
Captain Tom Moore has since been recognised nationally for his achievements and has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London.
The award, which celebrates significant achievement, was given to Captain Tom Moore via a virtual ceremony streamed on Youtube.
In response to receiving the award, Captain Tom said: “I am deeply honoured to be granted the Freedom of the City of London.
“I remain humbled by the love and gratitude that I have received from the British public, and this honour is something that I will truly value for the rest of my life.”

What was the touching Nick Knowles helped Captain Tom Moore?
Nick Knowles who is known for his popular makeover series DIY SOS revealed on Good Morning Britain he was asked to help Captain Tom with his home security following his fundraising efforts.
Nick told the morning show: “He’s done an extraordinary thing. I think it’s over £27 million now and when they started, it was to raise £1,000.
“But the world’s attention has been quite oppressive as well as beneficial. They’ve very grateful.
“They want things to keep going, and the money they’re raising is very important, but they’re also feeling a bit under pressure.”
Nick went on to add that he was approached personally through a friend.
Nick said: “Through a friend of theirs, I got asked to join in and help out and do a couple of things to keep them safe, and I’ve managed to do that.
“He’s an amazing man, and the family are really lovely too, and I was happy to help out there.

“There’s a bunch of people who are able to still work and are two metres apart, and we’ll be putting some extra protection for them.”
During his appearance on Good Morning Britain, Nick also mentioned how he and his fellow DIY SOS team are looking into ways to help out those who have been most affected by the pandemic.
Nick explained: “We’re looking around at things we can do that are relevant.
“People say to me, will you be doing something for emergency services? And it’s important to us – like at Grenfell, when we were there a few days after Grenfell.
“People say are you gonna build something. If it’s relevant – we don’t want to do a token build. If there’s something genuine that we can do then yeah.”
He went on to say how they want to help in any way they can.
He said: “We’re looking around to see if there’s something we could genuinely do that will help, you know.
“We don’t want to do something that looks like a sticking plaster on a severed leg.”
