When you think of Mark Hamill, two words come to mind: Luke Skywalker. The part that made Hamill a star was as the Jedi Knight in Star Wars, but more recently, he’s just as well known for some of his other roles as well.
The only difference is that now, most of the work Hamill does is with his voice as opposed to his body. Let’s take a closer look at the many voice acting roles of Hamill, including one famous evil doll.
The role that made Mark Hamill famous
Hamill became a household name of course when George Lucas cast him as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars film series. Hamill was the star of 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. He was the main character of the entire original Star Wars trilogy, playing Luke as fans watched him develop from a farm boy on Tatooine to a Jedi that saved the galaxy.
Hamill’s run as the character didn’t end with the original films, however. He came back for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in 2015’s The Force Awakens before being one of the focal points of 2017’s The Last Jedi.
Hamill’s final movie appearance as Luke came in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, in which the departed Luke appeared as a Force ghost to give Rey some much-needed advice during a key scene in the film.
While most Star Wars fans thought Hamill was done in the role, he recently reprised it again in a move that shocked everyone. He popped up in the season two finale of The Mandalorian (with the help of CGI).
The other role Mark Hamill is famous for
Hamill is quite popular as an actor, but he’s also carved out quite a niche for himself as a voice actor as well. Whereas most performers are lucky to have one iconic role in their career, Hamill’s voice acting has afforded him two.
Hamill may be best known for playing Luke, but there’s another role he’s become synonymous with: Batman’s archnemesis, the Joker. Hamill has never portrayed the Clown Prince of Crime in live-action, but he did provide the character’s voice in Batman: The Animated Series.
His performance soon became legendary, to the point where he’s been asked to return to voice Joker in numerous other Batman animated films and TV shows.
Of course, Hamill’s voice acting hasn’t stopped at the Joker. He’s even provided the voice of another comic book character: Wolverine of the X-Men for a video game.
Mark Hamill’s evil doll and other surprising voice acting roles
In an interview with The AV Club, Hamill discussed why he likes performing in voice acting roles: he can take more chances.
“In animation, there’s an anonymity involved….since they can’t see you, you’re liberated to make much bolder choices than you would make if you were on camera. And there’s a certain satisfaction—not only because I was a comic book fan—that it turned out so well, but it was so diametrically opposed to what I had become famous for, which was this iconic virtue.”
According to The Ringer, one surprising part that Hamill found himself playing was the evil doll Chucky in the 2019 reboot of the iconic horror character. It’s just one of many surprising roles inhabited by the chameleon-like Hamill, including:
- The groundskeeper Skips on Cartoon Network’s Regular Show (according to Animated Times)
- Firelord Ozai on The Last Airbender
- As both Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi on an episode of Family Guy
As great as Hamill was as Luke, he’s made an even bigger name for himself in the second act of his career as a voice talent.
