Lil Nas X Shared a Look at His Pole-Dancing Training for the Provocative New ‘Montero’ Video

When rapper Lil Nas X released the music video for his latest single ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ on Friday, it went viral almost immediately, and it’s not hard to see why. The CGI fantasy world it takes place in borrows heavily from Biblical imagery, starting in a Garden of Eden-like setting, then moving into a Roman colosseum before rising up into the heavens… and plummeting into the underworld for its most controversial final act, which sees the openly gay musician giving a lapdance to a horned, devilish figure (think Dave Grohl in ‘Tribute’ meets Tim Curry in Legend).

‘Montero’ has been praised by critics and fans for its playful, provocative, and unabashedly queer sensibility, and predictably lambasted by Christian, conservative voices for pretty much the same reasons. Nas accompanied the release of the video with a post on social media addressed to his 14-year-old self, in which he explicitly articulated his reasons—not for the first time—for making queerness such a visible, unavoidable aspect of his work.

“This will open doors for other queer people to simply exist,” he wrote. “You see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say I’m pushing an agenda. But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the fuck out of other people’s lives and stop dictating who they should be.”

More recently, on Instagram, Nas has shared a clip of himself from back in January learning to pole-dance, presumably in preparation for the iconoclastic sequence in the video which sees him spinning on a pole in thigh-high boots all the way down from heaven to hell.

While much of the world of ‘Montero’ is created using computer-animated trickery, pole-dancing takes real-life hard work—and can be a highly effective form of glutes and core training. Even the most basic component in pole-dancing, climbing the pole and hanging in place, builds strength in the abs, glutes and hamstrings, as Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel CSCS learned when he took on Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers routine.
