Strictly Come Dancing fans love married professional dancers Janette Manrara, 37, and Aljaž Škorjanec, 31. However, they may not realise when they first met he could not speak English.

The new presenter of BBC’s It Takes Two made the admission when speaking to Giovanni Pernice recently.

She said: “When I first met Aljaž, Giovanni I don’t know if I ever told you this story but he didn’t speak [English] basically.

“Just like, ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’, things like that.

“A year later when he came back and we started coming back, and dating, the English was much better.

“But I feel like it’s a never-ending lesson really.”

The Strictly pair also joked how it is a good thing he learned the language as otherwise they “wouldn’t work”.

Aljaž explained: “You speak Spanish, I speak Slovenian.

“We both speak English – thank God! That wouldn’t work otherwise.”

The couple were opening up to Giovanni about this when he was a guest on their podcast Twist & Shout.

The Italian Strictly pro was also chatting about how he learnt English for Strictly.

This year, Janette will be returning to the show in a new role for 2021.

She will be replacing Zoe Ball on the sister show It Takes Two, taking time away from dancing in the series.

Janette is expected to share hosting duties with Rylan Clark-Neal on the series.

Speaking about the new job on Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine, she admitted she was “excited”.

The dancer said: “I’m so excited, I’ve been a fan of Zoe Ball and It Takes Two since year one when I joined Strictly nine years ago now.

“I remember walking into the studio and thinking ‘This is the best job in the world, you get to sit down and talk about dancing.

“’I would love to do that some day’. So the day has come and I’m honestly so honoured and so excited.”

However, she did admit she will no longer be dancing on the show with the other professionals.

Janette explained: “Unfortunately once you say goodbye to that legendary dancefloor, you’ve said goodbye to the dancefloor.

“I’ve said that it was the easiest yes to say yes to doing It Takes Two but the hardest goodbye, the thought of having to say goodbye to the Strictly floor.”
