Hundreds Of Artists Endorse House Democrats’ Police Reform Bill

Hundreds of artists, actors and record labels have signed a letter endorsing House Democrats’ police reform Bill.

A letter, addressed to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, urges the Congress to pass the proposed Justice in Policing Act of 2020.

The signatories include Mariah Carey, Lizzo, Ariana Grande, Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Rihanna and Megan Thee Stallion.

The bill includes provisions to ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, to establish a national police misconduct registry, to collect data and improve investigations into police misconduct, to promote de-escalation practices, to establish comprehensive training programs, and to update and enhance standards and practices.

“We in the music and entertainment communities believe that Black lives matter and have long decried the injustices endured by generations of Black citizens,” the letter says.

The police reform campaign was triggered by the death of George Floyd in police custody.

Anderon .Paak, Grimes, Demi Lovato, Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder, the Jonas Brothers, Journey, Kehlani, Justin Bieber, Meek Mill, Rosanne Cash, Shawn Mendes, and Aerosmith‘s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are also among the hundreds that signed the letter.

After Democrats blocked a Republican police reform bill in the Senate on Wednesday, the House is expected to vote on their version as soon as Thursday.
