The cast of Gogglebox watched the coverage from Prince Philip’s funeral on tonight’s episode of the Channel 4 show. Although some of the stars, including Mary Killen and Julie Malone, were caught up in the emotion of the sombre event, others took the opportunity to make jokes, which shocked viewers.

The Gogglebox families were seen tuning in to footage of the service, which took place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle last weekend.

Tom Malone quipped: “You’d feel a bit safer driving home though, wouldn’t you, after Prince Philip’s funeral?”

Tom’s wife Julie was quick to scold her other half on his attempt at humour, by telling him he wasn’t funny.

Some viewers agreed with Julie and took to Twitter to share their complaints.

One person wrote: “#Gogglebox Mr Malone is uncouth and disrespectful to the funeral of Prince Philip.”

Another fan posted a GIF featuring the word “Yikes,” alongside the caption: “Tommy’s joke during Prince Phillip’s funeral #Gogglebox @TheMalonesGB.”

However, others defended Tom, with one viewer suggesting the Duke of Edinburgh, who was known for his controversial jokes, might have appreciated the remark.

They penned: “‘You’d feel a bit safer driving home though wouldn’t you after Phils funeral’ …and for those complaining you just know it’s the sort of thing Phillip would have said himself #Gogglebox.”

Siblings Pete and Sophie Sandiford also came under fire for their comments about the funeral.

One Twitter user wrote: “Pete & Sophie joking about Prince Philip’s funeral is disgraceful. How can @Channel4 show this? #Gogglebox.”

Tom’s joke comes after the Duke of Edinburgh was involved in a car crash while driving near the Queen’s Sandringham estate in 2019.

The late royal was not injured in the accident, which happened as he drove a Land Rover out of a driveway onto the A149.

The other car involved in the crash was a Kia.

The two women in the vehicle needed hospital treatment before they were discharged.

During last week’s episode of Gogglebox, Mary and Giles Killen changed out of their colourful clothing into black outfits as they mourned the death of Prince Philip, who died at the age of 99.

Initially, Giles was wearing a burgundy jumper with navy trousers while Mary donned a tartan skirt, a navy jumper with a bright red waistcoat.

Mary then confessed to her husband that she was going to mourn the Duke for a week.

“Nutty come on,” Mary said to her husband as he looked for something to wear.

Giles replied: “I’ve just spotted that my black jumper Mary is covered in dust.”

To which Mary said: “It doesn’t matter just wear the black jumper anyway.”

As they returned to their chairs, Giles asked: “How long are you going to be in mourning for Mary?”

“I think probably a week,” Mary explained.
