Gary Lineker, 60, suggested it was an “assumption” that Piers Morgan, 55, “quit” his role on Good Morning Britain, despite an ITV statement revealing it was his decision. The Match of the Day host came under fire for showing support to the outspoken host, following the announcement yesterday that he had left the flagship news program. It comes after Piers engaged in some explosive rants about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and their interview with Oprah Winfrey, which sparked outrage among viewers and seemingly ended his five years on the show.
You’re making assumptions
Ofcom were inundated with over 40,000 complaints about his on-air comments about the Duchess of Sussex, including being dismissive over the state of her mental health; something she touched upon in the highly-anticipated interview.
But before the TV regulator issued the outcome of their investigation, ITV shared a statement confirming the outspoken host had decided to quit, noting they had “nothing further to add” on the situation.
The news of his departure stirred major reaction from both celebrities and viewers, who were left divided.
Amongst those offering their support to the ITV star, was the former footballer, who took to Twitter to share his thoughts but claimed it was an “assumption” that his pal quit.
He posted: “Whether it’s a football manager, a television presenter or any profession for that matter, it’s always sad when someone loses their job.
“@piersmorgan is excellent at what he does and I’m sure he’ll be back on the telly soon.”
But it seemed his opinion wasn’t shared by many in the comments section, who took it upon themselves to criticise him for his beliefs.
“Is this a joke?” one questioned, before Gary replied: “No.”
The user continued: “He didn’t lose his job, he walked away from it. after he publicly stated that a woman who said she’d felt suicidal was lying about it. after weeks, months and years of targeted harassment. what about this makes you sympathetic to his plight?”
Gary hit back: “You’re making assumptions.”
“It’s hardly an assumption that he repeatedly harassed her on national tv is it?” the GMB viewer replied.
The former footballer added: “The assumption that he quit.”
Others questioned what he meant, with one snapping: “It’s pretty common for people to get sacked when they’re consistently racist and misogynistic and a general all round bully, Gary.”
“It doesn’t matter if he quit or not, in any other job he would have already been fired for bullying, racism, harassment and sexual harassment. Why should he get away with that just because he’s on the tv?!” a second exclaimed.
A third queried: “Are you lying @ITV that he ‘decided now is the time to leave’?”

“Is your assumption was that Piers was pushed? If so that is some sweet karma for toxic media was the reason Harry and Meghan was pushed to step back then away…” someone else retorted.
A fifth added: “If the assumption is wrong and he was fired then it’s still the right result.”
It all comes after yesterday’s explosive GMB episode, that saw Piers walk off set after weather presenter Alex Beresford criticised him for his behaviour.
Alex discussed his own personal experiences of “covert and overt” racism in the workplace after Harry and Meghan said there were conversations regarding “concerns” about how dark their son Archie’s skin would be.
“You’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme, and I understand that you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off,” Alex stated.
“Has she said anything about you after she cut you off? She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. And yet you continue to trash her.”
At this point, the Good Morning Britain host stood up and walked away from the set, saying: “OK, I’m done with this.”
Alex went on to say: “Do you know what? That’s pathetic. This is absolutely diabolical behaviour.”
