The Cruella trailer is huge!
The trailer for the Emma Stone-led Disney live-action feature debuted on February 17, and brought in 71 million views in its first 24 hours, Deadline reported Sunday (February 21).
The viewership count beat out the recent trailers for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (61.7M0 and Aladdin (60.8M). However, it did not come close to Lion King‘s 224M debut on Thanksgiving in 2018, nor Mulan‘s teaser trailer (175M) in July of 2019.
“In the Covid 24-hour insane social media breaking news world, the volume of social conversation was enormous for Cruella at 265K mentions surpassing both Aladdin (228K) and Beauty and The Beast (154K),” Deadline noted.
Here’s a synopsis: “set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, Cruella follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.”
The film is set to arrive in theaters on May 28.
