Chris Evans: ‘Thinking about it makes me cry’ Virgin Radio host in emotional family update

Chris Evans, 53, tried to avoid tearing up on Thursday’s Virgin Radio, after speaking about his son’s charity efforts for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic. 11-year-old Noah is hoping to raise £2,000 to help buy fabric to give to Scrubs Glorious Scrubs, a voluntary sewing collaborative making non-surgical scrubs for the brave NHS workers on the frontline.

Noah tries to reply to all of them, but he runs out of time because there are so many!

Noah has a JustGiving page for people to donate to his cause, set up by a seamstress based in Ascot.

The voluntary organisation has over 400 people up and down the UK making scrubs and bags for NHS staff to put their dirty clothing into at the end of the shift, to avoid any cross-contamination with their families when they get home.

And the youngster has sailed past his target, with a current total of £37,481 that will go straight to the organisation to buy more fabric.

Chris revealed the messages his son receives from members of the public who have donated to his cause, makes he and his wife cry.

He revealed Noah has been keeping a diary of his nights spent in the garden, which can also be found on his JustGiving page where he has more that 1555 supporters following his journey.

“We sit down after dinner as a family, we sit around Tash’s [Chris’s wife Natasha] laptop and check out all the donations for the day, every single one of them.

“And Noah tries to reply to all of them, but he runs out of time because there are so many!”

The radio DJ beamed with pride as he described how some of the messages touched him and his family.

“They all – this is pathetic,” he chuckled as he was holding back tears.

“They all make us cry!

“Just thinking about it makes me cry because it’s the comments that kill you,” he explained.

And they certainly are lovely comments, for a lovely cause!

Chris himself has been partaking in a charity initiative for the NHS, launching an auction from items kept in his garage.

Speaking to his listeners on Monday, he updated them with how it’s all going: “So, there’s an auction underway! And it’s doing really well!” he gushed.

“It’s for the NHS, if you go to the website our page comes up straight away because the beautiful people – Paul and his team there – have put us on the cover page.”

“We are on the homepage with our 19 items from the Evans’ garage sale and this stuff is almost all from our garage – not the sofas of course,” he explained, as the auction includes two couches, one of which Chris “regretted” giving away, but admitted it was “too big” for their living room.

With the proceeds going towards helping NHS staff acquire relevant PPE and other necessities they need in order to keep providing care for those suffering with COVID-19, Chris will be happy the huge Roche Bobois corner sofa will be going to a good home.
