Ben Shephard gives emotional update on Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper as he battles coronavirus

Ben Shephard has given an update on his pal Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper, who continues to battle the coronavirus.

After watching a sweet video of a woman, who had suffered from the deadly bug, reunite with her family outside of the hospital, Ben said on Good Morning Britain: "That moment when you can finally touch your loved one [after they've been] a ventilator."

The 45 year old's co-host Ranvir Singh, 42, replied: "Families who have gone through this -– it's not a case of go in and you'll get better soon, you go in and, 'I don't know, I don't know'."

Ben, who recently announced he has family members who are "very ill" with covid-19, added: "And 'I can't be there'."

The TV presenter later addressed what the entire nation waits on week after week as he said: "Lots of you, as ever, getting in touch with me asking for an update and how Derek's getting on.

"She posted on Instagram she, Darcey and Billy were out last night applauding our carers and she wrote: 'So grateful too for our amazing #nhs doing so much for Derek everyday – wonderful to see all the support for them & our key workers every Thursday. [sic]

"We can’t thank them enough can we ? So brave. Sending love to everyone during this ghastly time , particularly all those struggling for whatever reason- none of this is easy. [sic]

"Thank you so much for your messages – they mean so much to me. . Love and so much thanks from me and the whole family. X #staypositive#hope#standtogether#nhs '." [sic]

Kate, 52, who recently described the situation as "the hardest time of her life", has been isolating at home with her children Darcey, 14, and 10 year old Billy.

Clearly feeling emotional about Derek, also 52, Ranvir said: "It's a dreadful time and I think she's at home with two children, trying to keep going and it's still a total unknown. But as she said, there's still hope."
