Anne Robinson announced as new Countdown host after Nick Hewer quit show

Anne Robinson has been announced as the new presenter of Countdown, after Nick Hewer quit last year.

The Weakest Link star Anne, 76, will please Nick Hewer, who quit the show late last year after the lockdown made him reconsider his career.

Anne will become the first woman to lead the show in its 38 year history, though Rachel Riley runs the letters and numbers board on the show since 2009.

Strictly Come Dancing star Rachel, 35, took over from Carol Vorderman after she quit the show. While Susie Dent is in the dictionary corner checking contestant’s answers.

The news was announced on Channel 4 show Steph’s Packed Lunch.

Before sharing the latest addition to the Countdown line up, they shared a conundrum of Anne’s name on Twitter.

As they posted the image, the page wrote on top: “The #countdown conundrum has been set so now it’s over to you – who do you think is the show’s new host?

“We’ll reveal the answer on #PackedLunchC4. Tune in now @Channel4!”

The news was then announced but some fans had figured it out early and shared their guesses on Twitter.

One wrote: “Simples – Anne Robison lol.”

Another said: “Thinking it's Anne Robinson. Personally, think it's a good choice.”

As a third penned: “Anne Robinson, then. Interesting.”

Steph’s Packed Lunch host Steph McGovern then confirmed the answer to the conundrum was in fact Anne.

As she appeared via video link, Anne shared her happiness at the announcement. She said: “I am beyond thrilled to be joining Countdown. The show is almost as old as I am and just as historic.

“I am particularly excited to be working alongside the show's two other formidable women.

“Worryingly, Susie and Rachel are not only very smart but younger, prettier and thinner than me.

“Sadly, there's no time for another face lift so I'll have to make do with this old one.

“Three Clever Girls Do Countdown! Don't you love the sound of that?

“I am a crossword nut so the Countdown conundrums I can make sense of. But the adding up and taking away – I can't go much further than working out the fee once my agent takes his cut.”

No nonsense host Anne, known for her harsh quips at contestants on The Weakest Link, will make her TV debate on the show in the summer.

She is also known for presenter Watchdog and Points of View.
