“I consider myself a bit of a hair chameleon,” says Taraji P. Henson. That’s true: Henson has never been afraid to try a new hair color, cut, or style on and off the red carpet. The superstar and founder of haircare brand TPH By Taraji admits that she often gets “bored” with her natural hair and feels compelled to switch up her look. In this episode of How I Do, the actress shows off her new magenta hair transformation, as well as the products and steps to get the perfect body waves on short hair.

Henson’s TPH by Taraji collection of products take a scalp-first approach to hair health. “You must get into caring for your scalp like you do for your face,” she says. “If you do not clean your scalp, whatever is on your scalp will end up on your face.” Henson reaches for her 2021 Harper’s BAZAAR Hair Award-winning Never Salty scalp scrub to gently exfoliate and remove buildup. We awarded it because the genius targeted applicator allows the scrub to actually reach your scalp, no matter how coarse or dense your hair may be.
Henson’s chic short haircut and bold color was a reaction to all that happened last year. “Hair holds energy. Whenever I feel bogged down, you know, 202o was a hoot! I had to cut her out,” she says. “Here we are with fresh 2021 hair.”
Once her hair is clean and conditioned, she dries, irons, and wraps it before bed. To style her hair the next morning, she parts it using a bone comb and then begins curling small sections of hair using a 1/2 inch flat iron. “It’s all in the flick of the wrist honey,” she says as she works on each curl. “Tym Wallace taught me that.” Wallace is Henson’s go-to hairstylist.

Henson’s transition to natural hair wasn’t easy. “My hair texture is very different from my mother’s and she really had an issue working with it,” she shares. “So my mom started perming my hair when I was at the ripe old age of six. I had my hair permed until I was 26.” It wasn’t until she moved to Hollywood and met some hairstylists on set that she learned how to work with—not against—her beautiful texture.
For the longer top sections of hair, Henson switches from a flat iron to a curling iron to create slightly larger curls. After the heat styling is done, Henson applies the new TPH hair oil to add shine and help break up the curls into loose body waves. She then finishes with her Slick Edge Control cream and an edge brush to give “a complete look.”
